Humidity in the Azores
In the Azores you always have between 70 and 90% humidity in the winter season. You cannot compare the climate with that on a continent, as Azores are only tiny areas of land surrounded by thousands of square kilometers of water. In the winter months we have dehumidifiers in operation in all country houses and recommend our guests to use them. You will find what only a few holiday homes in the Azores offer: air conditioning that also dehumidifies and heats, as well as a wood burner.
Toilets
There is no public sewer system on the island of Santa Maria except for the main street of Vila do Porto and some sections on the beaches. All houses have an underground septic tank on the property. This is invisible and odorless, but cannot process toilet paper. Therefore, with a few exceptions, you have to dispose of the toilet paper in a folding bucket next to the toilet in all houses on Santa Maria, including restaurants. This takes getting used to, but can still be found in many rural areas around the world.
Casa Boavista is located in the scenic east of the island, in the municipality of Santa Barbara. You have a wonderful panoramic view of the mountains, valleys and the village of Santa Barbara. The house is located together with the neighboring house Casa Emilia on a plot of approximately 12,000 square meters. One of the most beautiful hiking trails on the island leads right past the property. In the center of Santa Bárbara there is a café and a mini supermarket with the very friendly, English-speaking owner Alice. Probably the most beautiful bay in the Azores, São Lourenço, with its sandy beaches and a large seawater swimming pool, is only a few minutes' drive away.
Since the house is on a hill, the way up is quite strenuous, especially if you have to buy something - the price you have to pay for the breathtaking view over the village, the mountains and the valleys. There is a bus connection several times a day to the island's capital, Vila do Porto. We still recommend a rental car, with which you can quickly get to the beaches and explore the island. A taxi from the capital to the house costs 15 euros, but should be ordered in advance.
